Malls, business parks and large commercial complexes are the most demanding environment we work in. The spaces are enormous and double-height, the footfall is relentless, planting gets brushed past and occasionally interfered with, and the whole scheme has to look deliberate rather than like pots left in a corner. Get it right and greenery does something valuable for a retail landlord: it makes people slow down and stay longer.

Where planting works in a large complex

Entrances and drop-off. Large, symmetrical statement planting that establishes the property’s standard from the car park onward, in planters heavy and stable enough for an exposed, high-traffic position.

Atriums and central courts. Double-height volume needs scale — a scattering of small pots reads as an afterthought. This is where mature specimen plants and grouped arrangements earn their cost.

Concourses and circulation. Planting used architecturally: softening long runs, marking transitions, and gently guiding footfall without blocking it or breaching fire egress requirements.

Food courts and seating zones. Greenery that separates seating clusters and makes a busy hall feel less like a canteen. Species chosen for warmth, spillage and constant human contact.

Common areas of business parks. Reception lobbies, lift lobbies, walkways between towers and shared breakout areas — the parts tenants judge the landlord on.

No storage, no dead stock, no disposal.

What high-footfall environments actually demand

Durability over delicacy. Public planting gets touched, leaned on, and occasionally has litter dropped in it. We select robust species and avoid fragile material in reachable positions.

Weight and stability. Planters in public circulation need a low centre of gravity. This matters for safety as much as appearance.

Frequent servicing. A mall installation needs more attention than an office, not less. Leaf cleaning, litter removal from planters and immediate swap-out of anything damaged are part of the routine.

Fast replacement at scale. When something is damaged in a public area it has to be replaced quickly, not next month. Operating from our own nursery in Pashan means we hold the stock to do that.

Work outside trading hours. Installation and major servicing happen before opening or after closing, coordinated with your facilities and security teams, with staff details shared in advance for access.
